Match a waveform to its simulation source

Understand how a local testbench run records its source files and checks the waveform before displaying it.

In the Windows app, a testbench simulation records the saved source files used for the run. Its run record also identifies the testbench, simulator version and waveform.

Windows: source and waveform

  1. Saved source files

A run records its saved inputs.

Saved inputs identify the run

In Testbench simulation, Run saves changed simulation input files before starting. The run records a SHA-256 fingerprint for each source file and included file. A fingerprint identifies the file contents used by that run.

If a source file, included file or Verilog setting changes during the run, the run fails and the simulator log asks you to run it again.

The waveform belongs to that run

Before displaying the waveform, Digital Design Studio checks its size and SHA-256 fingerprint against the run record. The waveform label identifies the testbench and simulator version.

Read a result after editing

A waveform describes the saved inputs used for its run. After editing the design or testbench, use Run to produce a result for the updated inputs. Open Simulator log to read the run messages.
