Keep unsaved edits when a file cannot be saved

Keep your changes after a save error, save them under a new name and close tabs without losing work.

When Digital Design Studio cannot save a file, your edits stay in the editor and the tab still shows unsaved changes. This applies in Cloud and in the Windows app. Saving under a new name works in Cloud.

Keep unsaved edits

Keep the tab open.

Cloud + Windows

  • 1. Save
  • 2. Edits kept
  • 3. Ctrl+S

Cloud

  • 5. New file

Connections

  • 4. Save file as → 5. New file: Save

What you see

DDS shows a save error, such as The file could not be saved. or The file changed elsewhere. Reload the latest content before saving.

The editor text stays as you left it. Keep the tab open. After you fix the cause, press Ctrl+S to save again.

Save your edits under a new name in Cloud

  1. With the file's tab active, press Ctrl+Shift+S to open Save file as.

  2. In New file path, enter a project path that is not in use.

  3. Select Save. DDS creates the new file with your edits and switches the editor to it. The original file stays unchanged.

If the path is already in use, choose another path. Existing files and open editors are not changed.

In the Windows app, Save file as shows Safe file creation is unavailable in this workspace. Your editor contents are preserved. Keep the tab open and press Ctrl+S to save again after you fix the cause.

If the saved file changed or is missing

File changed on disk: the saved file changed while you had unsaved work. In Cloud, use the save button in this notice to open Save file as and keep both versions.

File not found: the file is no longer at its saved path. In Cloud, save your edits under a new name to recover them.

File unavailable: the file could not be loaded. The tab and its contents are kept. Select Retry when the workspace is available.

Close a tab without losing changes

  1. When you close a tab that has unsaved changes, DDS asks whether to save them first.

  2. Select Save to save and close, Don’t save to close without saving, or Cancel to keep the tab open.

  3. If the save fails there, the dialog stays open and shows Could not save. Your changes are kept. Select Cancel to keep the tab and your edits.

Use the recovery copy on this device

In the main editor window, while a file has unsaved changes, DDS also keeps a recovery copy of them on this device. When you open the file again in the same project on this device, DDS restores the edits as unsaved changes. If the saved file changed in the meantime, the tab shows File changed on disk.

Unsaved edits in a separate editor window in the Windows app have no recovery copy. Save them before closing that window.

If DDS cannot keep the recovery copy, it shows This device cannot keep the latest recovery copy. Save your work before closing or updating.

A recovery copy is not a saved file. Save your edits to keep them in the project.
