Read a Git diff

Compare saved working files, staged changes and committed files in the Windows app.

In the Windows app, open a Git-backed project in a folder on your PC and save your editor changes. You can use local Git without signing in.

Open a saved comparison

  1. Open Source Control and choose Refresh.

  2. Select a text file in Changes or Untracked. The current commit is on the left and the saved working file is on the right; a new file has an empty left side.

  3. Select a text file in Staged. The current commit is on the left and the staged file is on the right.

Read the comparison

  1. Check the file path and the revision labels at the top of the comparison.

  2. Choose Side-by-side diff or Unified diff to change the layout.

  3. After saving, staging or committing, choose Refresh comparison to capture the current comparison.

Compare a committed file

  1. In Source Control, choose History and select a commit.

  2. Select a file in the changed-file list to read the saved revisions for that commit.

Read the source control guide for local Git and remote account setup.
